Finally, they have their answer: Canelo will compete in a Mexico vs. Mexico showdown, but not against expected challenger David Benavidez. Instead, Canelo will face a young star competing in the biggest fight of his career.

Canelo is set to fight Jaime Munguia on May 4, defending his status as undisputed super middleweight champion. The fight will air on Amazon Prime Video and take place in T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas. It will also air on DAZN.

The event will not be hosted by Golden Boy, where Munguia is signed. It will fall under Canelo’s deal with Premier Boxing Champions. Canelo confirmed the fight on social media after ESPN first reported it.

“I’m very proud and excited to be able to make this fight,” said Canelo. “A Mexican versus another Mexican is always a huge fight and it’s been a while since there’s been one like this. It’s great to give an opportunity like this to a fighter that’s earned it like Jaime has. It gives me a lot of joy that two Mexicans will be facing each other in such a big fight for the sport.”

A four-division champion, Canelo turned pro in 2005. He has beaten several of the sport's best, including Shane Mosley, Miguel Cotto and Gennady Golovkin. In less than 11 months, Canelo became the undisputed super middleweight champion, beating Callum Smith, Billy Joe Saunders and Caleb Plant. He failed to capture light heavyweight gold a second time in his career, losing to Dmitry Bivol in May 2022. That was his first loss since 2013 against Floyd Mayweather, ending a 16-fight unbeaten streak.

Canelo rebounded by beating Golovkin in a trilogy contest. After undergoing wrist surgery, Canelo returned in May, beating John Ryder to retain his titles. He embarrassed Jermell Charlo in September, and many expected him to face his brother Jermall.

The last time Canelo fought a Mexican fighter came in 2017, when he beat Julio Cesar Chavez Jr.

Munguia turned pro in 2013. He claimed super welterweight gold when he beat Sadam Ali in 2018 for the WBO belt. The Mexican fighter defended the title against Liam Smith, Takashi Inoue and Dennis Hogan. Moving to middleweight and then super middleweight, Munguia only fought once in 2023, beating Sergiy Derevyanchenko in June. His last fight was a statement-making TKO win against Ryder in January.

“I’m very, very happy and filled with enthusiasm for this great opportunity,” said Munguia. “I’m incredibly grateful to everyone involved who were able to make this fight a reality. We are ready to give fans a great night of boxing on Saturday, May 4. I can’t wait to demonstrate to the world that I am capable of doing great things. Viva Tijuana and Viva Mexico!”

Canelo's fourth defense of his undisputed world super middleweight crown is arguably his most intriguing yet. The Mexican will fight a compatriot for the first time since May 2017 when he beat Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. and, though this isn't the bout against current WBA regular champion David Benavidez that the world wants to see, it nevertheless represents a different look for the 33-year-old.

Canelo hasn't always convinced since losing to Dmitry Bivol up at light heavyweight four years ago and though his savage body shots continue with trademark brutality, the Guadalajara native needs to look good.

Munguia is an unbeaten former light middleweight world champion whose move up the divisions has been relatively serene. Back in January, the 27-year-old stopped British fighter John Ryder in the ninth round to definitively announce himself at 168lbs and put himself as the next best option to face Canelo – after a fight with Jermall Charlo fell out of favor and no deal to be done with Benavidez – on his traditional Cinco de Mayo date.

Canelo fought Ryder two contests ago and went the distance, proving that if Munguia can box at range and start quickly – he's notoriously slow out of the blocks – then this could be a closer bout than some may think.

Below, we'll show you how to watch Canelo vs Munguia live streams from anywhere – in Mexico, the U.S. or abroad. Plus, we provide all the details of a packed card and the all-important tale of the tape.

    CANELO VS MUNGUIA LATEST NEWS
After the Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez and his former promoter Oscar de la Hoya nearly came to blows at Wednesday's press conference, the attention of fight week has returned to the actual bout in question tomorrow: Alvarez vs Jaime Munguia.

Though David Benavidez remains the shadow Canelo just can't shift, plenty of boxing pundits think Munguia represents a worthier opponent than two of the Mexican's most recent opponents.

"The [Jermell] Charlo fight, [Canelo] just had to show up. The guy had given it to him already," said former two-weight world champion Paulie Malignaggi. "The Golovkin third fight, Golvokin was already 40 years old and spent.

"If Canelo is going to beat Munguia, he's going to have to show something. I think he's going to win the fight. I think it's a year too soon, but Munguia is going to bring enough to the table to show Canelo that he has still something in the tank."

Chris Algieri, another former world champion, thinks Munguia has a decent chance of causing the upset. "He can win this fight," said Algieri. "He's definitely the underdog and I'm not saying he's going to."

    Later today, Friday, May 3, we've got the all-important weigh-in to tick all the final boxes ahead of tomorrow's massive world title fight. The weigh-in starts at 4 p.m. ET / 1 p.m. PT / 9 p.m. BST / 6 a.m. AEST (May 4).
